Vox VFZ-1 Treble Booster
Classic British bite. Modern VOX engineering.
Few guitar tones are as iconic as a VOX amplifier driven by a vintage British treble booster. Heard on legendary recordings by Rory Gallagher, Brian May, and Marc Bolan, this combination helped define the sound of early rock music. The VFZ-1 revives that legacy with a modern, road-ready design that captures the musical character of classic treble boosters—without the instability and limitations of vintage Germanium circuits.
Vintage character, modern stability
Original treble boosters relied on Germanium transistors, prized for their rich nonlinear response but infamous for noise, inconsistency, and temperature sensitivity. Simply replacing Germanium with Silicon often removes the magic, so VOX engineers took a different approach.
By closely analyzing multiple vintage units and carefully modeling their behavior, VOX developed a unique circuit that recreates the wide, expressive nonlinear range of Germanium using a single, precisely biased Silicon transistor. The result is a smooth onset of drive, complex harmonics, and exceptional cleanup when rolling back your guitar’s volume—hallmarks of the best classic treble boosters.
At the heart of the VFZ-1 is a hand-selected Silver Can BC108 transistor, chosen for its consistency, low noise, and authentic vintage feel. Modern thin-film resistors further reduce noise beyond what was possible with 1960s components.
The sound and feel of the originals
The VFZ-1 retains the simplicity of a classic single-transistor design while delivering far greater reliability and predictability. Its custom biasing places the circuit squarely in the sweet spot, making it easy to live in that expressive edge-of-breakup zone.
Lower your guitar’s volume for bright, chimey cleans, or turn up the Boost control to push your amp into harmonically rich overdrive with focused presence and ample headroom.
Authenticity meets flexibility
While remaining true to vintage voicing, the VFZ-1 offers added versatility for modern players. The Fat Switch broadens the boosted frequency range, allowing anything from tight, cutting attack to thicker, fuller punch. Careful circuit design keeps noise to a minimum—even at higher gain settings.
Designed to pair with VOX amplifiers
Matched with a VOX AC15 or AC30, the VFZ-1 unlocks the singing, touch-sensitive overdrive that defined the golden era of British rock. Dynamic, interactive, and highly responsive, it delivers classic treble booster tone with modern reliability.
Iconic tone, reimagined
Vintage treble boosters are rare, expensive, and unpredictable. The VFZ-1 brings their sound and feel back in a compact, stable, and pedalboard-friendly format—faithful to the past, refined for today.
