The Walrus Audio Fable Granular Soundscape Generator MKII is a stereo ambient effects pedal combining delay and granular processing to create evolving textures, rhythmic glitches, pitch-shifted cascades, and expansive soundscapes. Five distinct modes pair two effects in series through independent feedback paths, allowing processed signals to continuously interact and develop into complex, layered sounds.
At the heart of the Fable is a granular processing engine that manipulates short samples, or grains, taken from a delay buffer. These grains can be played forward or backward, at double or half speed, from multiple positions, or at randomized playback speeds to produce pitch shifting, time stretching, and unpredictable sonic textures.
Mode I combines reverse delay with reverse granular processing for fluid reversed swells or stuttering glitch effects. Mode II pairs forward delay with octave-up granular processing for bright, shimmering cascades, while Mode III combines analog-style delay with octave-down granular processing for deep, dark atmospheres. Mode IV layers two multi-tap granular algorithms to create complex, reverberant textures, and Mode V combines forward delay with randomized pitch granular processing for constantly shifting, unpredictable patterns.
The dedicated Tweak control provides access to five additional parameters: stereo Width, modulation Rate, modulation Shape, pitch Shift, and transition time (Ramp). A momentary Dive/Rise function lets you temporarily change the pedal's playback rate, while three onboard presets, a live mode, MIDI control, and assignable expression functionality offer extensive performance flexibility.
Built on Walrus Audio's proprietary MDSP digital processing platform, the Fable features stereo connectivity, MIDI clock synchronization, USB-C firmware updates, and selectable Trails or No Trails bypass modes. It is a versatile creative tool for ambient guitar, experimental music, sound design, and immersive sonic textures.
