Step 8 Sequential Tracking + Sampling Register
Patch programmability is one of the finest joys of creative modular synthesis, and since Joranalogue's Step 8 covers sequencing, switching, and an abundance of other uses, it promises to be a crucial centerpiece of any patch. Joranalogue refers to the Step 8 as a Sequential Tracking/Sampling Register, as it can be thought of as a one-to-eight switch with a precision track-and-hold or sample-and-hold circuit at each output. It's an ideal tool for Analog Shift Register effects, polyphonic adapting, and hocketing in your Eurorack modular synth.
The core behavior of Step 8 is set by the Cycle/Shift switch, and defines how voltages are remembered by each stage. In Cycle mode, advancing a stage, via the manual button or an external trigger, will route the input to the next stage, much like a standard sequential switch, except in that the internal sample/track-and-hold will keep holding the voltage. But should you want that traditional behavior, the Solo/All switch mutes inactive stages, dropping their output to zero volts. Shift mode turns Step 8 into a shift register, where voltages are passed down the line to the right.
Each stage offers its own slider functioning as a unity gain attenuator, as well as individual voltage and gate outputs. When no external signal is patched in, Step 8 generates an internal positive five volt signal for the purposes of sequencing or voltage mapping. Stage movement can be manipulated via control voltage, with a Pause gate input allowing for advance triggers to be ignored, as well as Reset and Reverse inputs.
